               DAHI BARA - ALOO DAM




Dahi Bara and Aloo Dum. A famous street food of Odisha. And I am sure every Odiya who have been staying away from their home must be craving for this.


Dahi Bara is found in different states of india and so as aloo dam. But the combination of both is something you would find only in Odisha.



You would find vendors with big handis (vessels) on both sides of their bicycle selling on the streets.


Ingredients: 

Urad daal or black grams, curd, potato, ginger, onion, garlic, pudina and all other required spices according to your taste.


preparation of dahi bara:

  1. Soak the Urad Daal for 6 hrs.
  2. Grind the Urad Daal, Green Chilies and Salt to a thicker batter.
  3. After the batter is prepared place the batter outside till it gets fermented.
  4. After the batter is made, deep fry making small balls out of it (I personally love this small ball shape).
  5. In a bowl, soak the friend baras with some water so that it gets swollen.
  6. In the meantime, when the bara is fried and soaked the tempering of the curd should be ready
  7. Add a cup of water to the 2 cups of the curd to make of thinner consistency and all salt to it.
  8. Add the pinch of the black pepper powder to the curd and add the soaked baras in the mixture.
preparation of aloo dam:
  1. Boil the potatoes in the pressure cooker.
  2. Peel off the potatoes and cut it into medium cubes.
  3. In the meanwhile, Heat a Pan or Kadai with Vegetable oil.
  4. Add the cumin seeds to the heated oil and splutter it for 1 min.
  5. Add the Chopped onions and fry it till golden brown.
  6. Add the Ginger-Garlic Paste and saute till its cooked.
  7. Add all the powdered masalas (Cumin Powder, Coriander Powder, Garam Masala, Red Chili Powder) and saute it.
  8. Add the chopped tomatoes and saute it till the masalas (spices) are cooked and the oil is released.
  9. Add the salt according to the taste.
  10. Add the potato cubes and cook it for 2 mins and then add 2 cups of water and let it simmer for 3-4 mins.
  11. Turn off the cooktop after the gravy has come into a medium consistency.
